Our History

Fundecooperación para el Desarrollo Sostenible was founded in 1994 as a private foundation with multi-segment representation and a socio-environmental approach for the purpose of providing farmers and small enterprises with access to appropriate financing.

At present, Fundecooperación’s goal is to promote sustainable development in Costa Rica, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by financing and extensively supporting entrepreneurs and SMEs throughout the country, providing technical assistance and aiding sustainable business plans with opportunities for environmental improvement, in addition to providing advisory in the various stages of project growth.

Fundecooperación works to meet the financing and technical assistance needs of micro, small and medium enterprises engaging in sustainable and innovative economic activities with an environmental commitment, building together an economic and environmental model that serves to boost the progress and development of communities and the country in general.

Fundecooperación promotes partnerships that drive improvement and project growth through training, assistance and advisory.

Key Milestones over 25 Years

2019

• Fundecooperación is accredited at the Global Network for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) as National Coordinating Organization for the European Union-funded Visión de Primera Línea program.

2016

• The tenth anniversary of the Customized Credit program is celebrated.

2015

• The trust is wound up and Fundecooperación takes on direct financial management of the lending program.
• An agreement with FIDEIMAS is signed for the granting of endorsements to facilitate financing for the lower socioeconomic population.
• Our Customized Credit program earns a European award in Microfinance and Environment from the Office of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
• The Adapta2+ program is launched, with Adaptation Fund funding, as the first national adaptation initiative in agriculture, coastal areas and water resources.

2012

• The Program for South-South Cooperation between Benin, Bhutan and Costa Rica is successfully completed, with a total of 36 projects implemented.
• Fundecooperación is accredited as the National Implementation Entity for the United Nations Adaptation Fund in Costa Rica.

2010

• The Program for South-South Cooperation is recognized by the United Nations for its impact and receives the UNOSSC Partnership Award.
• The Program for South-South Cooperation is recognized as one of the best solutions in the climate change category by the High Level Committee on South-South Cooperation of the United Nations General Assembly.

2007

• Implementation begins of the Program for South-South Cooperation (PSC) for Sustainable Development between Benin, Bhutan and Costa Rica.

2006

• Fundecooperación launches the Customized Credit Program on the market.

2004

• Over the first ten years, more than 200 cooperation projects in sustainable development were implemented with the participation of more than 150 public and private organizations.

2003

• In line with the Netherlands’ changing cooperation priorities, the Bilateral Agreement for Sustainable Development is concluded.
• The Netherlands donates the remaining funds to Fundecooperación to set up a lending program in the form of a trust and to start the organization’s transition process.

2002

• Declaration of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg (Río+10). With the support of the Netherlands, a commitment takes shape for trilateral work and south-south cooperation between Benin, Bhutan and Costa Rica.

1994

• Fundecooperación para el Desarrollo Sostenible is founded to facilitate implementation of the Bilateral Agreement for Sustainable Development between the Netherlands and Costa Rica, and to support sustainable development in Costa Rica.

1992

• Earth Summit Agreements, Río de Janeiro.
• The Netherlands promotes a new form of international cooperation for sustainable development, set forth in bilateral agreements with three countries located on different continents: Benin, Bhutan and Costa Rica.
